About Pack 63

Cub Scout Pack 63 is part of the Boy Scouts of America.  The program is designed for boys in the 1st through 5th grades.  Each grade level has a program geared towards that age group.  Pack 63 is chartered by the First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton.  We run our program from September through April or May, and try to get in a couple of pack activities after this period.  Cub Scouting is family oriented.  Pack meetings are designed for the entire family to attend and family attendance is encouraged.  The family plays a large role in Cub Scouting.   At least one adult family member needs to be with each scout at all Tiger Den meetings and outings.

Pack 63 is run by the Pack Committee.  This committee meets once a month to organize pack activities, pack meetings, and determine how pack funds are spent.  The committee is made up of the Committee Chairperson, Cub Master, Assistant Cub Master, Treasurer, Advancement Coordinator, Secretary, and Den Leaders.  All levels of Scouting are represented.  The committee is open to all adults who would like to attend.  Committee Meeting minutes are available to all members of the pack, so that they are aware of the decisions and issues addressed at the meetings.  We also publish information about upcoming pack events as part of the minutes.

Our Pack is comprised of about 30 boys ages 6 to 10.  Each boy is also a member of a small Den.  Currently we have about 6 Dens in our Pack.  Each Den has 5 to 10 boys all of similar age and Scout rank.  The boys do the majority of their advancement work in their Dens and homes.  The Pack provides resources to the Dens and oversees their activities.  The Pack is also a great place to learn from other boys in the Pack.  Think of a Den as a neighborhood and the Pack as a city.  Our Pack’s web site address is http://www.scoutpack63.org.

Every Pack needs a sponsor, or Chartered Organization.  Our Pack’s sponsor is the 1st Presbyterian Church in Wheaton.  The web site address is http://www.firstpreswheaton.org/about/location.shtml.  You or your child does not need to be a member of the Church to be a member of our Pack.

There are several Packs in a District.  Our District is Chanonee.  The web site address is http://www.chanonee.com.

There are several Districts in a Council.  Our Council is Three Fires.  The web site address is http://www.threefirescouncil.org.

And there are several Councils that form National, which is the Boy Scouts of America.  The US Congress is its Chartered Organization.

Meetings: The Scouting year runs from September to June.  All meetings are held at the Church, which is located at 715 North Carlton Avenue, Wheaton.  The Pack meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of each month and begin at 7:00 P.M. and the Den meetings are held the 1st and 4th Thursdays of each month and begin at 6:30 P.M.  The few exceptions are around the holidays when neither the Pack nor Den will meet. The Pack will also plan an occasional outing.  As the details of some events are still being worked out, the dates, times or events will be communicated to you as well.  We also will try to do a few Den outing as well.  The Pack meetings and outings are family affairs and all members of the family are welcome.

In order to fully benefit from the experience, your Cub is expected to attend as many meetings, events and outings as possible.

Definitions

Pack – The collective group of Cub Scouts (grades 1 – 5), their parents or guardians, and family members (whether boys or girls).

Dens – Individual Cub Scout levels that meet together.  These are limited to Den Leaders, Cub Scouts, and the scout’s parents or guardians.

Pack Meetings – Normally, these are held on the 3rd Thursday of every month from 7:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church.  If we are meeting on another night or someplace besides the Church, the Pack Committee will notify the scout and his family.

Den Leaders – Den Leaders can be a father or mother.  Each den must have a minimum of 2 leaders.  Den meetings are normally held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., but may be changed based on the needs of the den.  Den Leaders plan and execute the den meetings.  Den Leaders are required to attend the monthly committee meetings.

Segments – A segment is a patch earned by the scout for participation in den and pack meetings.  A segment is given to the scout once a month for den meetings and at every pack meeting he is in attendance.  Some pack activities, such as “Scout Sunday”, have special patches given to the scout.  These are sewn on the scouts red “Brag Vests.”

Cub Scout Pack 63 belongs to the Chanonee District in the Three Fires Council, Boy Scouts of America.
