Since the Pack is all handled and managed on a volunteer basis, adult participation is crucial.  The Pack has many activities as outlined below, and the more people involved, the easier it is for everyone.  Some activities require a lot of time; others, not as much.  The key to these activities being successful or not is based on the level of communication to the Pack.  The Pack Committee is always available to help out, and usually, the person who handled the event the previous year is available to offer tips from their experience.  All expenses incurred by the coordinators are reimbursed from the Pack Treasurer.  Pre-approval of expenses is required.

** Adult participation is required for the following Pack activities and may be shared by 2 or more people:

Pack Activities requiring Adult Participation

Popcorn Kernal (Popcorn fundraiser) – Time commitment 2 – 3 hours p/week throughout September and October.
The coordinator(s) is responsible for the ordering, distribution and reconciliation of popcorn over the course of the selling period.  This person also coordinates the Show and Sells and should be available to be “on call” as needed for scouts to pick up popcorn and drop off money collected.   This person attends training and manages the turn-in of popcorn at the end of the selling period.

October Pack Meeting – Time commitment 1 hour (plus event time).  This meeting is usually held away from the Church.  In past years, we have held it at the Herrick Lake and the Glen Ellyn Boat House with a Halloween theme.  Danada Equestrian Center, complete with hay rides and a “bonfire” is also a pack favorite.  The coordinator(s) is responsible for arranging the date and time with the location event, and corresponding payment from the pack to the event location.

December Christmas Tree Trimming – Time commitment 2 hours (plus event time).  Tree decorations are made by the scouts at either a pack or den meeting, and then we go someplace to “Trim a Tree”.  Past places we have gone are Brookfield Zoo and Cosley Zoo.  The coordinator(s) is responsible for purchasing materials (reimbursable by the pack) to make animal edible ornaments.  Past ornaments have been popcorn/cranberry garland, carrot-cicles, marshmallow snowmen, etc.

December Pack MeetingTime commitment 1 hour (plus event time).  A fun-filled activity for the entire family.  This can change every year.  In past years, Cub Scout Pack 63 has gone bowling, swimming, or to Drury Lane to watch the children’s production of “A Christmas Carol”.  The coordinator(s) is responsible for booking the event and coordinating payment between the pack and the event location.

Blue and Gold Dinner – Time commitment 2 – 3 hours (plus event time).  A dinner to celebrate Cub Scouting.  After dinner, there is entertainment for everyone.  Past entertainment has included a magician, a ventriloquist, a Game Show D.J., etc., paid for the Pack.  The coordinator(s) is responsible for booking the entertainment, ordering the food and ensuring its delivery, decorating the room, and coordinating payment between the pack, the entertainment and the restaurant.

Pinewood Derby – Time Commitment 3 – 4 hours (plus event time).  The most anticipated event of the year.  Each scout receives a pinewood derby kit:  a block of wood, 4 nails, and 4 plastic tires.  Using his creativity, cutting tools and paint, a car is created.  These cars then race down a track to the excitement and entertainment of all.  The coordinators are responsible for the purchase and distribution of “cars”, set up and take down of pinewood derby track, starting the races, and keeping score.  In addition, the coordinators judge cars for “Best Paint”, “Most Original”, etc.

Annual Hockey Outing – Time commitment  1 hour (plus event time).  The Pack attends a Chicago Blackhawks or Wolves game.  The coordinator(s) is responsible for getting a headcount, collecting money from non-scouts (other family members), ordering tickets and distributing them.

Scouting for Food – Time commitment 3 hours.  The pack organizes an annual food drive for delivery to the Wheaton Resource Center.  The coordinator(s) is responsible for printing flyers and attaching to bags, printing maps for drop off/pick up areas, and enlisting help to get the collected food to the Resource Center.  The food drive is done in 2 days.  One day is dedicated to dropping off the flyers and bags to the homes noted on the maps, and the other day is for collecting the food.

Annual Pack Picnic – Time commitment 3 – 4 hours (plus event time).  An informal picnic at a Forest Preserve or Park.  Food and games are organized for everyone’s enjoyment.  The coordinator(s) is responsible for arranging all activities and games, as well as food preparation and/or ordering.

Scout-O-Rama – Time commitment 2 hours (plus event time).  An area-wide activity organized by the Three Fires Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  This event is held at the DuPage County Fair Grounds in May.  Packs and Boy Scout Troops from all over the area set up a booth with activities for the scouts.  The coordinator(s) is responsible for organizing the game or activity our Pack will provide and staffing the booth with volunteers.  Past booths have included a bean bag toss with a Spider Man theme, a game of toss the toilet paper into the toilet, etc.

Memorial Day Parade – Pack 63 marches in this parade every year in Wheaton.  (no coordinator needed)

Summer Outing – Time commitment 1 hour (plus event time).  Pack 63 usually organizes a summer outing for scouts and their families.  Going to a Kane County Cougars game has been a favorite activity.
