The Cub Scout Path
Bobcat Rank – New Recruit Entry Level – The scout is at this rank level for only a few months. They learn the “Cub Scout Promise”, “Cub Scout Motto”, and “Law of the Pack” among other things. All scouts must achieve this rank, regardless of what grade level they start at. Once this rank is achieved, there is an “Advancement Ceremony” to present the Bobcat patch to the scout. This is the 1st of the 5 patches of Cub Scouting.
Tiger Cub Rank – 1st Grade Level – Tiger Cubs is an introduction to Cub Scouts. There is a book designed for Tiger Cubs. Some years we have followed this book, and other years we focused solely on monthly “field trips”. The incoming group of Den Leader(s) and Tiger Cub parents can decide which program they would like to follow. If using the book and having monthly den meetings, the Boy Scouts of America require that there be 2 Den Leaders or adults at every meeting. If the field trip method is used, all parents and family members are encouraged to attend.
Wolf Rank – 2nd Grade Level – The scouts work on this rank throughout the course of the year. They gain knowledge about the flag, tools, fitness and safety. Once this rank is achieved, there is an “Advancement Ceremony” to present the Wolf patch to the scout. This is the 2nd of the 5 patches of Cub Scouting.
Bear Rank – 3rd Grade Level – The scout works on this rank throughout the course of the year. The Bear learns more about God, his country, and himself. Once this rank is achieved, there is an “Advancement Ceremony” to present the Bear patch to the scout. This is the 3rd of the 5 patches of Cub Scouting.
Webelos Rank – 4th and 5th Grade Levels – This is the final rank of Cub Scouts. The boys work on this level during all of the 4th grade year, and half of the 5th grade year. This is a transition level from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. The Webelo learns about the Boy Scout uniform and the meaning of the Boy Scout badge. They may participate in an overnight campout and will visit area Boy Scout Troops. They work on activity badges as part of their activities. The scout achieves his Webelos patch, the 4th of the Cub Scout patches, and the Arrow of Light patch, the final Cub Scout patch. These patches are awarded at an “Advancement Ceremony”. The Arrow of Light Patch is the only Cub Scout patch that may be worn on the Boy Scout uniform. The scout will also decide at this point if he is going to continue in scouting by becoming a Boy Scout. Webelos choosing to go on to Boy Scouts take part in a “Crossover Ceremony”. This is usually done in conjunction with a Boy Scout Troop. At this ceremony, he leaves his Cub Scout Pack and joins his Boy Scout Troop. |
